She has presented at both state and national conferences on topics including FEES, dysphagia rehabilitation, and swallow screening protocols. Kara holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA, is a member of the Special Interest Group on swallowing and swallowing disorders, and is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing disorders. She is a committed lifelong learner and is excited to collaborate with other clinicians to expand their skill set and to improve care for their patients through Forward Focused, LLC.

Kelly Salmon SLPD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLT-LANA, NDC

Kelly is a speech‐language pathologist specializing in the treatment of adults with communication and swallowing disorders across the continuum of care. She has been a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (BCS‐S) since 2011 and earned designation in 2014 as a Lymphology Association of North America Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT‐LANA) specializing in the treatment of head and neck lymphedema.

Over the course of her career, Kelly has focused on becoming an expert in the treatment of swallowing disorders resulting from many medical conditions including head and neck cancer, stroke, and progressive disease. The use of modalities and device-driven treatments as well as evaluation and treatment of head and neck lymphedema have become focused areas of clinical practice for Kelly over the years. She is also passionate about working with individuals undergoing total laryngectomy to rehabilitate and restore communication and swallowing function throughout the various stages of survivorship.

Kelly earned her bachelor’s degree in speech pathology and audiology through Stockton University in New Jersey, her master’s degree in speech pathology at New York University, and completed her doctorate in speech language pathology at Nova Southeastern University in 2018.  She completed a research study examining swallowing-related outcomes for individuals undergoing specialized robotic surgery for head and neck cancer as part of her applied dissertation. This study was recently published in the journal Dysphagia. She is currently involved in research initiatives investigating the relationship between SLPs and Radiologists as interprofessional colleagues in the fluoroscopy suite and is currently planning to investigate the influence of exposing students to training in the technical skills and interpretation of fiberoptic endoscopic examination of swallowing (FEES) procedures within a graduate program on the development of confidence and competence during clinical externships, clinical fellowship, and during early-career experiences.

Kelly takes pride in contributing to the field of speech-language pathology through teaching and supervising graduate-level students, presenting posters and courses at national conferences, and engaging in multidisciplinary research initiatives. She has recently transitioned from full-time clinical practice to the academic setting as an Associate Professor at Salus at Drexel University in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. She also maintains a small clinical private practice.
